Who We Are

Plimsoll Gear®, a new casual apparel company, is the inspiration of DJ Femia Leeuwenburg. D.J. became familiar with the Plimsoll Mark as the wife of a retired Merchant Mariner now Marine Cargo Surveyor.

Several years ago, DJ was drawn to one of her husband’s business cards by what she considered to be a very ‘cool’ logo, bold, strong, with the midline balanced. She discovered this symbol to be the Plimsoll Mark, the international shipping industry’s symbol for load balance to keep everyone safe at sea.

Because D.J.s’ studies at UNC-Chapel Hill focused on “wellness, the balance of mind, body and spirit” (a practice she continues), she had an idea to combine their two backgrounds and begin a clothing company which honors balance at sea and in life.

D.J. and Charles grew up in the NC coastal port towns of Morehead City and Wilmington. Throughout their lives, the couple at times wears apparel celebrating surfing, sailing, boating and other sea related ventures.

Now, there is apparel celebrating all who are involved and bring us 95% of all the world’s goods through shipping, those who love the sea as well as all who seek balance in life.Shortcut to SmartFTP
